Bishop

‘Bishop’ comes from the Greek word for ‘overseer’. So a bishop is a senior Christian minister authorised to have oversight for God’s people. As well as duties given to deacons and priests, bishops confirm and ordain.

Diocese

‘Diocese’ refers to the geographical territory in which a bishop exercises oversight. The Church in Wales is divided into six dioceses each with its own cathedral in which is housed the cathedra (the bishop’s ‘chair’ or ‘throne’).

Holy Communion

At Holy Communion blessed bread and wine is shared, by which we receive the body and blood of Jesus Christ. The congregation gives thanks for Jesus’ life, his death and resurrection and his continuing presence. See also Eucharist.

Theological

‘Theology’ means literally ‘words about God’. Christian theology involves our trying to understand and explain what God has revealed about himself through Scripture. This work is aided by the writings of past and present theologians and human reason.

A healthy Christian community is one which ensures and nurtures the wellbeing of all. Safeguarding needs to be embedded in all aspects of the life and ministry of the Church, and safeguarding training and development at the Church in Wales is delivered in this context.

The training you will access will equip you and your church to engage positively with the protection of children, young people and vulnerable adults in a practical and informed manner.

The training is designed and delivered by experienced and skilled trainers, committed to ensuring the Church is safe and welcoming place for all, who understand the statutory requirements of safeguarding children and adults, and how these are carried out in the context of the Church in Wales.

Training sessions now available. You may attend any of the sessions in any of the Dioceses, but you will need to select both a B1 and a B2 to complete the training. Training only requires updating every three years.

These sessions are for all who hold an ecclesiastical office, or who hold licence/PTO/commission from the Diocesan Bishop (whether lay or ordained), for those who run Sunday School or Youth clubs, Organists/Directors of Music, for whom an enhanced DBS is required.

You must book your training session. When you fill out the form, please add the date and name of the course. Please ensure you have selected both parts of the course if required.

Module A: Safeguarding Awareness Course

The Module A, Safeguarding Awareness course is currently unavailable as we have been reviewing and re-writing this, so that it is up to date and fit for purpose. The new module A will be available soon. While we wait for that to be finalised, we still deliver module B, this does cover more training specific to safeguarding within a church context and includes what is relevant from Module A. Not having completed Module A will not be a barrier to undertaking Module B during this time.
