Bishop

‘Bishop’ comes from the Greek word for ‘overseer’. So a bishop is a senior Christian minister authorised to have oversight for God’s people. As well as duties given to deacons and priests, bishops confirm and ordain.

Diocese

‘Diocese’ refers to the geographical territory in which a bishop exercises oversight. The Church in Wales is divided into six dioceses each with its own cathedral in which is housed the cathedra (the bishop’s ‘chair’ or ‘throne’).

Priest

‘Priest’ comes from the Greek word for ‘elder’. Priests in the Church in Wales are those authorised specifically to proclaim forgiveness of sins, preside at the Eucharist and bless God’s people, as well as other responsibilities.

New Priest Licensed for Caia Park in Wrexham

The Bishop of St Asaph has licensed a new priest for the community of Caia Park in Wrexham.

The Rt Revd Gregory Cameron licensed Father David Morris, the former Bishop of Bardsey, in a special service of welcome at St Mark’s Church last Thursday (9 July).

In addition to his ministry in Wrexham, Father David is also serving as Diocesan Director of Ordinands. In this role he is responsible for guiding those discerning a call to Christian ministry, along with supporting those training for ordination.

Originally from Cymmer in the Rhondda Valley, David graduated in Theology from the University of Wales, Bangor, and trained for ministry at St Michael’s College, Llandaff, where he also completed the Master of Theology degree.

David was ordained as a priest in 2010 at Llandaff Cathedral and served his curacy in Merthyr Tydfil. Two years later, David was appointed parish priest of Grangetown in Cardiff, where he served for seven years, and was also Vocations Advisor for the Diocese of Llandaff. In 2019, he was appointed as Director of Ordinands and a vicar in the Vale of Glamorgan before moving to Bangor in 2022 to become Diocesan Director of Ministry there. While in Bangor, David was appointed assistant bishop in May 2024.

Bishop Gregory said: “It is good to welcome David to the Diocese of St Asaph. We look forward to his contribution in working with those exploring the call to ministry, as well as serving the community of Caia Park from the newly redeveloped St Mark’s Church.”

Father David said: “I am incredibly excited and eager to begin my new ministry in the Caia Park community, serving alongside the congregation of St Mark’s and in collaboration with lay and ordained colleagues in the wider Wrexham Mission Area. I’m looking forward to discerning with St Mark’s how we might find new ways to share the love of God and the hope of the gospel, working in partnership with other local organisations and institutions, faith communities, and elected representatives.”

Father David Morris’ licensing and service of welcome took place on Thursday 9 July at 7pm in St Mark’s Church, Caia Park, Wrexham.
