Diocese of Bangor recognised for continued commitment to the Welsh language
The Diocese of Bangor has again been recognised by the Welsh Language Commissioner for its commitment to promoting and supporting the Welsh language.
The Diocese first received Cynnig Cymraeg recognition in 2022 and has now secured recognition for a further three years following a review of its Welsh Language Plan. It is committed to promoting the Welsh language and encouraging new Welsh speakers across the life of the Church.
The diocesan Welsh Language Plan commits to treating Welsh and English equally across worship, communications and public engagement. It includes
- Maintaining a fully bilingual website and social media presence.
- Supporting staff and clergy in learning and using Welsh.
- Providing bilingual training and events.
- Encouraging people to worship and communicate with the diocese in the language of their choice.
Elin Owen, Welsh Language Enabler for the Diocese of Bangor, leads this work by supporting churches, clergy and ministry areas to strengthen and develop their Welsh language provision.
Elin says, “We are delighted to have received this renewed recognition for our commitment to the Welsh language. Welsh is a natural part of life in the Diocese of Bangor, and we want people to feel able to worship, communicate and take part in the life of the Church in the language of their choice, while also encouraging and supporting new Welsh speakers.”
Learners who wish to worship in Welsh are also supported through the Duw a Dysgwyr initiative - a short service for learners - held monthly at Bangor Cathedral, with ‘pop-up’ services also taking place in various churches within the dioceses, the most recent being in Conwy last week Conwy. Menter Iaith Bangor have been supporting the ‘Lunch and natter’ element of this which takes place after the services in the cathedral in Bangor.
A beginner’s ‘on-line’ Welsh learning course has also been developed in partnership with Dysgu Cymraeg Cymru to help clergy and church goers learn Welsh and use more of the language in their services. This includes a simplified eucharist service and the lord’s prayer.
The next Duw a Dysgwyr is at St Mary’s Church in Caernarfon on the 1st of June- all are welcome.
