Archbishop Welcomes New Senedd Representatives
Following the 2026 Senedd election, Plaid Cymru has emerged as the largest party, and will likely form the next Government within the next few days following a vote in the Senedd.
This election was the first to take place under the Senedd’s new electoral arrangements, with the number of Members of the Senedd increasing from 60 to 96 as part of reforms designed to strengthen scrutiny and representation in Welsh democracy.
Voters across Wales elected representatives using a new constituency structure and voting system, in one of the most significant changes to the Senedd since its establishment in 1999.
The overall voter turnout was 51.65%, with people across Wales taking part in shaping the future direction of the country.
Statement from the Archbishop of Wales
As the people of Wales have chosen their representatives for the next Senedd, on behalf of the Church in Wales, I offer my congratulations to all those elected to serve our nation.
To be entrusted with public office is both a great privilege and a profound responsibility. At a time when political debate can so often become divided and difficult, I pray that all Members of the Senedd will be guided by wisdom, integrity and a commitment to the common good.
Our democracy is strengthened when disagreement is marked by respect, when dialogue is thoughtful and generous, and when those in public life remember their shared duty to serve every community in Wales.
The Church in Wales assures all Members, whether re-elected or elected for the first time, of our prayers and support as they undertake the important work ahead.
