Community Transfer of Closed Churches and Halls

The Church in Wales is committed to ensuring that closed churches and halls which are no longer required to support the mission of the Church can continue to play a positive role in local communities. Where possible, we seek to enable these buildings to contribute to the wellbeing and long-term sustainability of the communities they serve.

The documents below set out our policy for the transfer of closed churches and halls to community groups. They also explain the process followed by the Church in Wales when considering proposals for community transfer.

Making an Initial Enquiry

As a first step applicants are encouraged to contact the Church in Wales to arrange an initial meeting. This informal discussion allows us to:

  • Talk through your proposal at an early stage.
  • Explain our policy and requirements in detail.
  • Provide guidance on the process before you complete and submit the formal Proposal Form.

This early engagement helps us to work together to ensure that proposals are well-developed and aligned with the Church in Wales’ policy.
