Bangor school children to mark St Deiniol's Day with city centre pilgrimage

Bangor city centre will be transformed by a procession of schoolchildren on Thursday 11 September, as around 200 local schoolchildren lead a pilgrimage through the city centre to mark St. Deiniol’s Day and Bangor’s 1500th anniversary celebrations.

The procession, beginning at 11:15am at Bangor Cathedral, will see pupils accompanied by the rhythmic energy of Gethin Thomas Cerdd Amdani as they make their way down the High Street, past the clock, through the Deiniol Shopping Centre and into the Bible Gardens. Residents and visitors are encouraged to line the route and cheer on the children as they bring Bangor’s ancient story to life.

Earlier in the morning, celebrations will begin at 10am with a service in Bangor Cathedral led by the Cathedral clergy, including performances from Ysgol Tryfan and Ysgol Friars. Eight pupils will also be recognised for their cathedral-inspired artwork, created in workshops with Pilgrimage Engagement Officer Nia Roberts. A colourful exhibition of banners, designed by participating schools in the Bangor 1500 colours, will be unveiled inside the Cathedral.

The event will conclude with a creative finale led by Fran Wen, blending music and movement inspired by the pupils’ banners.

The Saint Deiniol’s Day Celebration has been organised by the Diocese of Bangor with support from Bangor City Council and Menter Iaith Bangor, and is part of the Bangor 1500 commemorations.
