A colourful depiction of the Virgin Mary and the Christ Child has been selected as the winning design in the Bishop of St Asaph’s Christmas Card Competition. The blue, purple and pink illustration has been drawn by 11-year-old Grace Horrocks from St Mary’s Church in Wales School in Overton, near WrexhamGrace’s image was one of more than 1,400 submitted by children from the 50 Church in Wales Schools across the Diocese of St Asaph. This year, the theme was Jesus is Born. The winning design has been turned into the cover of a Christmas card, which the bishop sends to family, friends and colleagues all over the world. On the back of the card is an image by Haf Morris, who is 4 years old and from Llansantffraid school. Haf’s image depicts the Holy Family in the stable.Earlier today (13 December), the Bishop of St Asaph, the Rt Revd Gregory Cameron, and his wife, Clare Cameron, visited St Mary’s School to present Grace with a prize and 10 Christmas Cards, which she can send out to her own family.Bishop Gregory said: “I am always charmed by the creativeness of the pupils in our church schools and the way in which they interpret the theme. There is something joyous about a childlike appreciation of Christianity, of which adults need to be reminded.”In addition, another design by a pupil at St Mary’s was selected to be the cover of a digital card being used by churches and mission areas across the diocese to invite people to their Christmas services. The nativity scene depicted in that image was drawn by 9-year-old Emily Hughes.
