Toddlers and care home residents join forces for musical trail on Anglesey

Pre-school children and elderly residents from Llangoed-based Haulfre Care Home are coming together for a musical storytelling trail in Llangoed, Anglesey on Sunday 29 March as part of the Aberlleiniog Sculpture Trail 2026.
The event brings together Camau Bach, a play group run by Bro Seiriol Ministry Area – a group of Anglican churches in the Beaumaris area – and residents of Haulfre care home in what organisers describe as a chance for different generations to share creative fun.
Residents, most of whom are in their 70s and 80s, will play alongside the children in the weeks leading up to the event to create props and scenery for the trail. Three workshops will take place at the care home, where residents and children will rehearse together and produce artwork to be used in the performance.
Beaumaris-based composer Ellen Davies has written the original music and choreography for the trail, which tells the tale of a caterpillar’s transformation into a butterfly.
The performance will be fully interactive, with children, residents, parents and carers all taking part. Some parents and carers from the toddler group will read the story and help with large props, while the commissioned artist will lead the choreographed movement. Another carer will play the music for the singing, which adults and children will perform together.
During the performance the children will move around the space acting out the story, while residents will take part by assisting with props and joining in from their chairs and wheelchairs.
The trail is designed for pre-school children along with their older siblings and carers. Everyone attending will be able to watch a short demonstration before joining in themselves, starting as caterpillars and transforming into butterflies through music, song and movement.
Two performances will take place on Sunday 29 March: the first at 2pm in the residents’ lounge at Haulfre care home, and the second from 3pm to 4pm at Llangoed Village Hall, where visiting families will also be invited to join the activity.
The Caterpillars and Butterflies Trail forms part of the Aberlleiniog Sculpture Trail weekend on 28 and 29 March, which will present more than 50 artworks, installations, performances, guided walks and community projects across the Aberlleiniog community woodlands, around Aberlleiniog Castle, along the springs and rivers, on Lleiniog beach and at Llangoed Village Hall.
The free annual event brings together local and national artists, naturalists, makers and volunteers alongside members of the local community.
A further session of the Caterpillars and Butterflies Trail is planned for the Llangoed Easter Saturday Community Fun Day at Llangoed Village Hall on 4 April 2026.
The project has been supported by the Sodexo Holyhead Community Micro Fund.
