Local artists transform gallery into sacred pilgrimage space

A journey of faith, history, and creativity has come to life in Dyffryn Ardudwy, as Oriel Tŷ Meirion opened an exhibition inspired by the ancient Llwybr Cadfan pilgrimage route.
The exhibition, which runs from 16 August to 20 December, brings together artworks shaped by the 128-mile path that follows in the footsteps of sixth-century Celtic missionary St Cadfan. The route stretches from St Cadfan’s Church in Tywyn to Bardsey Island (Ynys Enlli), just off the Llŷn Peninsula.
Launched by the Diocese of Bangor in September 2024, Llwybr Cadfan has since been recognised as one of the UK and Europe’s best hikes you haven’t tried. Winding through ancient churches, beaches, forests, hills, and villages, the 12-day journey offers pilgrims and walkers a deep connection to Welsh heritage and landscape.
Gallery owner and exhibition curator Mima selected the exhibition’s participating artists following an open call in May 2024. Many works draw on key landmarks and historic sites along the route, with some artists taking up residencies on Bardsey Island in preparation for the show.
Alongside the main artworks, visitors can explore the Llwybr Cadfan Pilgrim Stamps project, led by the Diocese of Bangor’s Schools Pilgrimage Officer Nia Roberts. Over 600 children from schools along the route took part in workshops exploring the meaning of pilgrimage, linked to the Welsh Curriculum’s concept of cynefin – a sense of community, culture, and place. The children’s winning stamp designs will be on display, and the Llwybr Cadfan Pilgrim Passport will be available to buy at the gallery.
Sarah Perons, Llwybr Cadfan Project Officer, said, “This exhibition shows how art can open a doorway into the spirit of pilgrimage. Through creativity, we hope the exhibition will inspire people to reflect on what pilgrimage might mean to them, how it can enrich their everyday life and deepen their connection to the landscapes and stories of North Wales.”
Oriel Tŷ Meirion is located close to the pilgrimage path, which passes through Dyffryn Ardudwy on day four of the journey. The exhibition runs from 16 August to 20 December and is open to the public Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 10.30am to 4.00pm.
