Celebrations for Minera Church after Roof Replacement

A church near Wrexham has re-opened following a major roofing project.
St Mary’s Church in Minera was closed for almost a year while the £170,000 project to replace the roof was completed by Kinmel Bay-based Grosvenor Construction.
The work was overseen by ten dedicated members of the Church Committee who applied for grants and succeeded in being awarded funding from the National Churches Trust and the James Pantyfedwen Foundation, to ensure the work could be completed.
The churchwarden of St Mary’s, Carol Douglas-Jones, said: “The church was in urgent need of a new roof to safeguard the interior and halt the damage being done by water ingress. Scaffolding surrounded the church for almost a year while the work took place, and regular services moved temporarily to Christ Church at Bwlchgwyn.
“We are delighted that the church is back open now and we are planning a series of fundraising events to fully re-decorate the church inside.
“Our Flower Festival in Summer 2024 raised almost £3,000.
“In December we have a Christmas workshop open to anyone wanting to create their own Table or Door wreath.”
In March this year, a new priest was appointed to St Mary’s in Minera. The Revd Helen Barnes was licenced as a priest in the Alyn Mission Area and now looks after the communities of Minera and Southsea.
Sunday services take place in St Mary’s at 9.30am, except on the first Sunday of the month, when the service takes place at Christ Church in Bwlchgwyn. All are welcome.
Minera is in the Alyn Mission Area, one of 20 Mission Area across the Diocese of St Asaph. Mission Areas are groupings of churches, working together to better serve their local communities.
