Advent

Advent means ‘coming’ and is the special four-week period leading up to Christmas. It is a time to prepare for the celebration of Jesus’s birth but also for his coming in glory at the end of time.

Lent

Lent is the six-week period leading up to Easter. It is a particular time to confess sin and to seek personal and collective renewal (a ‘springtime of the spirit’). Lent has a special focus on Jesus’s journey to the cross and prepares the Church to celebrate his resurrection.

Lent 2026 – from Pancakes to Palm Crosses

Welcome to the Church in Wales’ 2026 Lent Course! This is a provincial course that will take us on a pilgrimage across Wales, visiting each of our six historic cathedrals for each week of Lent.

This is a course designed to be completed in study groups, with discussion questions and videos provided, but it can also be completed alone.

Each video has a choice of English and Welsh subtitles, and all written materials are bilingual.

Each video is 10 minutes long, and provides discussion questions for a study group session that will last a recommended time of one hour.

We hope you enjoy this course and use it to draw closer to God during this season of reflection!

This course was made in collaboration with the Cathedral Deans, and written by the Very Revd Ian Black, Dean of Newport Cathedral.

All materials will be available to download on January 6th.
