Anglican

Anglicans form the family of Christians closely related to the Archbishop of Canterbury. Whilst tracing their inheritance back to Christ and the earliest Christians and to the ancient Roman Catholic church, the sixteenth century Reformation was a crucial moment for Anglicanism.

Bishop

‘Bishop’ comes from the Greek word for ‘overseer’. So a bishop is a senior Christian minister authorised to have oversight for God’s people. As well as duties given to deacons and priests, bishops confirm and ordain.

Diocese

‘Diocese’ refers to the geographical territory in which a bishop exercises oversight. The Church in Wales is divided into six dioceses each with its own cathedral in which is housed the cathedra (the bishop’s ‘chair’ or ‘throne’).

Holy Communion

At Holy Communion blessed bread and wine is shared, by which we receive the body and blood of Jesus Christ. The congregation gives thanks for Jesus’ life, his death and resurrection and his continuing presence. See also Eucharist.

Priest

‘Priest’ comes from the Greek word for ‘elder’. Priests in the Church in Wales are those authorised specifically to proclaim forgiveness of sins, preside at the Eucharist and bless God’s people, as well as other responsibilities.

Theological

‘Theology’ means literally ‘words about God’. Christian theology involves our trying to understand and explain what God has revealed about himself through Scripture. This work is aided by the writings of past and present theologians and human reason.

Chaplain to the Archbishop of Wales

Role Title: Chaplain to the Archbishop of Wales

Stipend: This is a stipendiary role with housing provided

Location: Bishopstow, Newport

Role Purpose

The Archbishop is elected from amongst the six serving diocesan bishops in Wales. The most recent election was in July 2025 when the current Bishop of Monmouth was elected as Archbishop. She continues to serve as Bishop of Monmouth and is supported by a Chaplain, an Executive Assistant and a Public Affairs Advisor.

The essence of the role is to support the Archbishop in theological, liturgical and pastoral matters relating to her ministry in the diocese, the province and across the Anglican communion.

The role includes being Focal Minister/Pioneer Priest for the equivalent of two days a week (including Sunday duties) at one of the churches, St John’s, in the Tredegar Park MA. Please see the profile in this application pack.

In priests’ orders in the Church in Wales or a church in communion with it
If not a confident in the medium of Welsh, a willingness to learn to use liturgical Welsh and to undertake Welsh language tuition
A willingness to work with the structures of the Church in Wales and the Diocese of Monmouth
An empathy with the mission and ministry of the Church in Wales
