The new Bishop of St Davids and Wales’ first woman bishop was greeted with cheers and applause after her election was confirmed on November 30.
The bishops of the Church in Wales met in “Sacred Synod” during Evensong at Llandaff Cathedral to confirm the election of the Canon Joanna Penberthy. During the meeting, which was open to all, they checked that the election had been carried out properly and that no objections had been brought.
Bishop Joanna, who was elected on November 2 by the Church’s electoral college, will now return to Llandaff Cathedral on January 21 to be consecrated as Bishop of St Davids.
She was warmly welcomed by the five other diocesan bishops and the congregation.
