In contrast to the other churches of the group Llanstephan is set high on the side of the Wye Valley. The first task is to find it as you drive around the narrow country lanes, ever higher. However when finally you get there you are rewarded with a view which leads you to praise the creator of such beauty.
The site was originally the home and place of worship for St. Ystyffan, in the days of the Celtic Saints. However the present church dates mainly from the 13th to 15th centuries. It was however extensively restored by the Victorians while leaving it externally still the solidly built church of medieval times.

As you park your car on arrival you are faced with a reminder of the more leisurly days of horse transport. The lytch gate was supplied with stabling for the clergyman's horse in the 18th century. The registers also go back to this time, dating from 1754, you can find further details of them on the Genuki site
Now however the church needs restoration, which is a heavy burden for a small rural community. Go to the pages for Llanstephan, provided by Millennium Internet Services to read more about this lovely church, see its beatiful situation and find out how you could help this congregation.
