cathedral

brecon cathedralFollowing the disestablishment of the Church in Wales in 1920, the former Priory Church of St John the Evangelist at Brecon became the Cathedral Church of the newly created Diocese of Swansea and Brecon in 1923. The church was adapted to serve as a Cathedral, and the former monastic buildings in The Close which, by then, were in secular hands, were recovered for the use of the Dean and Chapter to serve as vestries, a choir room and accommodation for the clergy. In recent years some of these buildings have been converted into a Diocesan Centre and a Heritage Centre, exhibition and shop, and in the 1990s an extension to the Heritage Centre was constructed to accommodate a restaurant.

The Cathedal Heritage Centre

The Heritage Centre, located in the old tithe barn alongside the Cathedral, with its Shop, is open every day as is Pilgrim's Restaurant. Opening times can vary slightly depending on the time of year, but these can be confirmed by direct contact or via the Cathedral Office. The Heritage Centre and the Restaurant can be booked for parish groups and parties by prior arrangement. Contact numbers appear to the left.
