From the Dean of Brecon

Among the privileges of exercising ministry in a Cathedral is the opportunity which this gives one to experience the glorious musical inheritance of the Church and to appreciate the tremendous commitment of those responsible for weaving that inheritance into the life of today's church. There comes also a recognition that a great gift is being passed on to generations of choristers, the majority of whom receive that gift with enthusiasm.

whilst feeling that sense of privilege in my own ministry in Brecon, and at the same time witnessing the passing on of this gift, I feel an increasing sense of anxiety for the future because our Cathedral has no music endowments. The financial support which music receives from the Dean and Chapter originates form the weekly income of the Cathedral, in the generosity of visitors and in regular support received from the Friends of the Cathedral. For too long that financial support has been insufficient to enable us properly to reward our music professionals, and non-existent when it comes to offering to our choristers the opportunity to develop the undoubted musical potential which many of them possess.

The Choir Music Endowment Appeal is the fruit of my anxiety and I commend it to you, expressing the hope that you will support our efforts and , in doing do, equip us to maintain and develop further the music which does so much to enrich us.

It goes without saying that without a successful outcome to this appeal, the future of music at Brecon will face a significant threat. If you would like to do so, please feel free to contact me directly and it will be my pleasure to personally answer any enquiries which you may have.
