property
The property department is based at the Provincial Offices at 39 Cathedral Road, Cardiff and is responsible for the purchase, sale and management of parsonage houses, church buildings, church halls and other pieces of land.
It is also responsible for the provision of advice to parishes on looking after their church buildings and churchyards, especially where that requires compliance with legislation (such as the Disability Discrimination Act and other health and safety requirements).
The department can be contacted at: property@churchinwales.org.uk
Redundant Churches
The Representative Body is responsible for the redundant churches of the Church in Wales, following closure for worship.
The list below provides details of redundant churches that are currently available for sale. The properties are usually offered freehold with certain restrictions upon future use and further information can be obtained from the appointed selling agent.
The Representative Body is required to comply with charity law in the disposal of its property. No warranty can be given upon the accuracy of the descriptions of the properties shown.
| Name | Location |
|---|---|
| St. John the Baptist | Clydach, Swansea |
| St. John the Baptist | Penydarren, Merthyr Tydfil |
| St. Thomas | Talywain, near Pontypool, Torfaen |
| St. David's | Newtown, Powys |
Where disposal of a former church isn't possible, demolition will be investigated. Sometimes disposal cannot be achieved because of difficulties in altering the building and, together with Cadw and the Friends of Friendless Churches, the Representative Body is a partner in a scheme for the preservation of a limited number of churches that are of outstanding historical merit and where alternative use cannot be achieved. There are currently 17 churches within the scheme and further information can be found at Friends of Friendless Churches.
Surplus Items for Disposal
Following re-ordering or the closure of a church, attempts are made to re-locate furnishings that are no longer required in other churches within the Church in Wales. Further information can be obtained from the Diocese concerned or from the Property Section of the Representative Body.
