A future secured for St Michael's Church

A scheme to preserve the Church at Manselton for generations to come.

2006 saw St Michael's celebrate 100 years of faith and worship.  In light of this, a working group was formed to assess the future needs for mission and ministry for the Anglican Church at Manselton; a Church which today looks out on a very different community for which it was built to serve in 1906.  The group explored a number of issues.  However, it concluded that a review of the present use of church buildings was a priority.

The group considered various options in terms of the provision of church/community facilities.  Initially, consideration was given to refurbishment of the existing buildings but this was rejected on the grounds of viability associated with the cost of repair and that for such expenditure the quality of the accommodation and particularly access issues could not provide value for money.  They concluded that a more efficient use could be made of the buildings by bringing all church and community needs under one roof.

Later that year, the Church Committee resolved that an approach be made to Grwp Gwalia, a local social housing provider, to investigate the feasibility of redeveloping the existing Church Hall and Hut for affordable housing accommodation and consolidating and improving the community facilities within the church building.  Following a further resolution, the Committee agreed to enter into a partnership with Grwp Gwalia who would redevelop the Church Hall and Hut and provide financial assistance towards the reordering of the church building to house the new facilities.

The essence of the project is the creation of a sustainable future for church/community facilities at Manselton whereby the existing outdated facilities of the church hall and scout hut will be redeveloped to create six two-bedroom flats for the over-55s at affordable rents.  The community facilities will thereby be consolidated into a single building within the church itself through a reordering of the existing space.  Work will also include new electrical and heating installations, re-roofing, stone repairs, the provision of a new West door and associated ground works.

The cost of the project is £335,000, and funding sources have been explored and have subsequently been secured.  The process has taken just over 5 years, and the reordering and restoration of St Michael & All Angels will commence on Monday 4 April 2011. A service of Re-dedication and the official opening of the new Community Facility will be held on Tuesday 8 November at 7pm.
