St Peter's Church notes

Recent events at Llandevaud...

The Church

We have now completed a thorough facelift of the church including redecoration, a new carpet and cushions for all the pews, making it much more comfortable and welcoming.

All of the cushions were very kindly donated by members or friends of the church in memory of loved ones and the cost of the carpet was also covered by similar donations.

The last two donations were particularly interesting. One was from Mrs Jennifer Tinnion in memory of her great- grandfather William Williams who lived near the church in a cottage which was later demolished to form the site of the Hall. Incidentally, there is a fascinating article by Mrs Tinnion in the Winter issue of the Magazine.

The other was from the Hayward family in memory of the Swinnertons , particularly their great-great-grandfather the Rev James Swinnerton , the well known former Rector of Llandevaud .

We are very grateful to all those who made this possible and a plaque in the church will form a permanent record.

We just pray that a few more parishioners will join us at our services and see for themselves what a lovely little church it is.

The Hall

The Hall has been redecorated and much needed improvements carried out to the kitchen. It is available for hire on a limited basis eg childrens/ private parties, and if you are interested, please contact a church member

Events in 2011

Easter

We had a very enjoyable and well attended Easter Day service; the flowers in the church were beautiful, thanks to Sue Alderson, Jennifer Hayes and Pat Harper. We also have a regular feature of a large vase of lilies, each one in memory of a particular person, with their names recorded on a plaque placed by the vase. Roger and Carol Taylor organise this little tribute each year and it is much appreciated.

Harvest Festival

We had a well attended service followed by High Tea in the Hall with the usual auction of produce so well conducted by David Harper. This is always an enjoyable event and this year was no exception.

Gift Day

To coincide with the Harvest Festival we had a Gift day . Our parish "share" (or quota) has gone up dramatically in the past two years and we cannot meet it out of regular collections, so we were very grateful for those who kindly made gifts to help us out.

Christmas

We welcomed a number of visitors, some from far-away places, to our Christmas Day service, so the church was well filled to hear our good friend John Bewley preach an inspiring sermon emphasising the message of Christmas. It was also a pleasant change to have Justine Morris, from Massachusetts, reading the Lessons and Jeremy Bewley, from Bristol, taking the Intercessions .

We are very grateful to John and his family for joining us on this happy occasion and to all those who helped with decorating the church, especially William Harper .

Fundraising

During the year we held some successful fundraising/social events, including a Skittles Evening, a Treasure Hunt and Barbecue, and just before Christmas a Hamper Raffle. Our thanks are due to all those who helped in many different ways, but particularly to Sue Alderson and Jennifer Hayes and their families who bore the brunt of most of the work.

Forthcoming Events in 2012

Preparations are in hand for a Skittles Night in the Hall in early Spring and possibly another a Quiz evening.

Dates have not yet been fixed but will be posted as soon as they are known.
