St Michael'sTintern Church

The Church is situated on the banks of the River Wye on the outskirts of the village (opposite the Wye Valley Hotel and behind the Parva Farmhouse B&B). The current Church in Wales rite is used, together with the 3 year Lectionary and traditional hymns. The congregation has a liberal theological and spiritual outlook and so welcomes everyone to its worship. St. Michael's itself stands on the site of a Celtic Church established in the 8th century and a large part of the 15th century mediaeval building still remain. The Victorians extended the nave in 1846 and the aisle contains flagstones from its own graveyard and from Tintern Abbey, one dated 1668. They also bricked up the priest's door in the chancel although its outline can still be seen. The East window is dedicated to Jane Damaris Audland, wife of the village surgeon and other memorials include one to Elizabeth Fielding whose husband was a Lord of Tintern Manor. The South porch is retained from the 15th century and features a fine groined roof with Tudor roses. It should be remembered that this site is much older than Tintern Abbey and continues to provide a tranquil haven on the Wye Valley Path adjacent to the River Wye. The Welsh borders were frequently the scene of conflict and churches throughout the area were often dedicated to St. Michael the Archangel, a favourite of soldiers. In fact St. Michael was a dedication in the Celtic Church long before it acknowledged the supremacy of Rome.
