Septuagesima - Education Sunday 5-2-2012

Choral Evensong in the Parish Church

What did you do for Education Sunday this year? Well we remembered the great contribution to education in the history of the Church in Wales and remembered great monastic schools like St Illtyd's at Llanilltud Fawr - Llantwit Major.

We also remembered to pray for the Faith Schools of our parish - Bishop Childs and St Mellons. We prayed by name too for the other three primary schools in St Mellons and sent e-greetings to them. We prayed for vocations to the teaching profession, school families and all who help in the management of our schools. We prayed that children may feel and secure when they are in our care.

But to cap it all in St Mellons Church in Wales School brought a choir of twelve children - there were some illnesses and an international - to sing Choral (yes Choral) Evensong at 4pm. They were directed by Mrs

Price, the Head, and accompanied by Mrs SM Kellen and had vocal support from two members of staff. Settings of the Versicles and Responses, Magnificat and Nunc Dimmitus had been chosen, along with an anthem sung in Welsh and two very traditional hymns - Dear Lord and Father of Mankind and Love Divine. Bible Readings were given by a member of staff and a pupil from Y6. The total effect was of crystal clear and angelic voices lifting us up to the heavens. Our next stop will be St Woolos Cathedral in the summer term - so take note please Fr Lister and Mr Barton.

In the congregation, transported in "wonder love and praise" were parents and parishioners, so that the total number in church that evening was 50+. A little more than usual! After the service we entertained and thanked people with a few light refreshments a la St Woolos.

PS Mrs Vicar tried to spread a story around that the Vicar's voice was a bit ropey and "try not to laugh"! The children were perfectly behaved and told me I had a really good voice.
