Pat Hum, RIP

It is with great sadness that we have learnt that Pat Humm, widow of the late Reg Humm, died peacefully on Friday last. Her funeral will take place in Alresford on Friday, 18 May.

Many of you will remember both Reg and Pat living here in Laleston before they moved some years ago to Alresford, Hampshire, to be nearer their children. Both were very much involved in the life of the church and the Gardening Club and we missed them very much after they had gone. They settled in Alresford and made a new life for themselves and Reg died a number of years ago. Since that time Pat kept herself well and busy until some while ago when she moved to sheltered accommodation, then into residential care. From there she went to a Hospice and so into hospital where she died on Friday morning. We give thanks for her life and for the memories that we have of both her and Reg We remember their children, Mary and Paul, and their families at this time. If anyone would like to go to the funeral I shall soon have details of time, etc so please ask.

Mothers’ Union

A reminder that there is no meeting this month, instead we are attending the Deanery Festival in Maesteg. A bus is leaving St David’s Church, Laleston at 16.45. please give your name to Mrs Anne Anthony if you wish to be on the bus. Cost of eh bus is £5 per head and we will leave Maesteg at 21.00.

2p Fund

Just a reminder of what we said in last week’s newsletter that the “Tuppence Fund” which we started a number of years ago, and which has now run its course has been “converted” into a fund for Ty Cariad. There are jars in both churches into which you are asked to put your small change – those annoying coins which accumulate in your pocket or purse, but when collected together amount to a considerable sum. If week by week you bring you small change and put it into the jars a substantial fund can be built up which will then prop up our other efforts in supporting the work of Ty Cariad. Through the newsletter we will report monthly on the progress of the fund. We were able to give Ty Cariad a donation of £350 when Paul Booth visited us a little while ago. This has now been gratefully acknowledged and we are told that it will be hugely appreciated by the team working with the children in Namugongo. We hope that this donation will be the first of many that we will be able to make to Ty Cariad and we look to you to support us in this. Small change in the jars will be the first step towards our next donation.

Olympic Torch

The Olympic Torch will pass through Laleston on 26 May. The Social Committee have plans in hand to make the occasion one to remember. During the course of the afternoon there will be a barbeque, along with other entertainment for the children. Plans are being made for a boules match, and if you are able to enter a team please let a member of the Social committee know your plans. There is a meeting of the Social Committee this week at which plans will be finalised and so we will be able to tell you more next week. Look out for the details

Fete

Have you been able to respond to the request in last week’s newsletter? We asked for help with selling raffle ticks on the two Saturdays before the fete – are you able to help with this? We are looking for volunteers for Saturday, 7 July and Saturday 14 July. Are you able to give an hour or two to help sell tickets and thereby give much needed publicity to the Fete? If you can help please do let us know.

Retreat

Is it your intention to join us for the parish retreat this year? If so please let us know as soon as you can. We need to have some idea of the number of people who will be joining us at Llangasty over the weekend of 15-17 June - so please do let us know if you intend coming.
