Olympic Torch

The Social Committee’s plans are well in hand now. Commemorative badges are being made for sale on the day, the barbeque is organised as is the bouncy castle. Bunting is going to be erected (for which help will be needed) and liaison has been established with BCBC’s publicity officer. Contact has also been made with the two young people who will carry the torch through Laleston and we will be able to let you know more about them shortly.  26 May promises to be an exciting and memorable day – hopefully you will want to be part of it and we look forward to seeing you. If you would like to become involved in the activities please let any member of the Social Committee know.

2p Fund

A reminder that the Tuppence Fund has been “converted” so that it is now being used to collect your small change to support the work of Ty Cariad. You will remember that the tuppence fund was set up in response to the then Archbishop of Wales’ challenge about caring tuppence for our children’s education. This was the millennium project which we undertook and as a result provided RE resources for all the schools in this area. Subsequent to that he fund was used to support the work which had been undertaken by the Church in Wales with the dental hospital in the Gaza. Support for the tuppence fund has gradually diminished until there are very few who are still bringing their 2ps to St David's and no one at all brings their 2ps to St Teilo's. Following a suggestion at the AVM this fund has been converted so that it can be used to shore up our efforts to support the work of Ty Cariad. However, the suggestion was that instead of just inviting your 2ps you are invited to put all of your small coins – those annoying coins which we get in our pocket or purse after shopping – into the jars which are in both St David's ad n St Teilo's. By doing this we will be able to build up a fund that will be added to any fund raising activities that we do in support of Ty Cariad.

Fete

Still a request for help with the selling of raffle tickets on the two Saturdays before the fete. Can you help on Saturday 7 July and/or 14 July for a couple of hours, please? Not only does the selling of tickets on these two dates give good publicity to the fete it also gives the fete a good financial boost to start off with. If you can help please let either the clergy or Mary Harris know – thank you in anticipation of your offers.

Area Dean

You may already know that the Area Dean of Bridgend, The Revd Sue Beverly has been appointed to a parish in the Diocese of Hereford. Sue leaves the Deanery and the parish of Nolton at the end of May. That being so the Archbishop has appointed me as the new Area Dean. For all practical purposes I will assume that role from Wednesday next although my licensing may not be for some while. I am sure that we all wish Sue well in her new post and thank her for the help that she has given us in this parish during the time she has been in Nolton. The news of my appointment is being released in the diocese today. Some of you will recall that I was Rural Dean (same job – different name) on a previous occasion. Bp Roy appointed me in 1994, but when Abp Barry became bishop of the diocese in 1999 he required all rural deans to cease in office after five years, so I ceased to be RD in 2004. A surprise telephone call from Abp Barry last week caused the mantle to fall again but this with the title “Area Dean”, one now adopted by the diocese which over the years has become far less rural than it was when that title was created many years ago.

Study afternoon

Another in our occasional series of study afternoons will be held next week so please note the date of Wednesday, 23 May for our next session. We will meet in the Church Hall at 14.15 and would be pleased if you joined us. These are very informal sessions in which we tend to look at one of the books of the bible or another aspect of our faith. It is the opportunity for you to seek an answer to that burning question you have, so come along and join us a week Wednesday.

Magazine

May’s magazine is published today and will be found on the table in both churches. Please do take your copy, and for anyone you know not to be in church today for whatever reason.
