St Mary
- The twelfth century church of St Mary is a wonderful building to worship in: a stunning example of the Decorated period of architecture. So many brides and grooms wish to be married here, since it is the perfect setting for a wedding. 'The early fourteenth century work of the chancel and nave,' says John Newman, is 'unmatched for its decorative finesse in the churches of Glamorgan.' You cannot say better than that!
The splendid sedilia and piscina incorporates some fascinating, exquisitely-carved stone heads of a king, a Celtic bishop and monks. Mythological creatures also writhe with each other, while, if you look carefully, you can detect an upturned head.
The noble, sharply-pointed chancel arch and John Hardman's pleasant series of stained glass also deserve attention.
The flat churchyard is one of the best maintained in the diocese and we receive many compliments about it. Even so, we are always looking for additional volunteers to help us retain this high standard.
