New Canons appointed
The Bishop of Monmouth, the Rt Revd Dominic Walker OGS, has appointed new Canons to take up vacancies in the Chapter (the governing body) of Newport Cathedral. Revd Tim Clement is Vicar of Bettws Newydd, Area Dean of Raglan and Usk, and Rural Life Adviser for the Diocese. He will take the stall of St Dewi made vacant by the appointment of Canon Richard Pain as Archdeacon of Monmouth. Revd Alan Tyler is Senior Healthcare Chaplain based at the Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport. He will take the stall of St Illtud made vacant by the retirement of Canon Raymond Summers. The Bishop has also appointed the Revd Roger Hewett, Vicar of Blaina and Area Dean of Blaenau Gwent, to become an Honorary Canon of the Cathedral. Roger won a ‘Leading Wales Award’ for his contribution to the community of Blaina in the category ‘Leadership Success through Partnership, to develop skills in the work place or the community’. The new Canons will be installed in a service at St Wools Cathedral Newport on Sunday, 16th November at 6.30 p.m. Speaking of the appointments, the Bishop said: ‘The three new Canons are priests who are exercising significant ministries and have strong leadership skills. Two are parish priests working in quite different environments – a valley parish and a scattered rural community; the other leads the chaplaincy team for the Gwent NHS Trust. Their appointment as Canons is a way of acknowledging the part they play in the community and the church’. Canons were originally the 'monks' who were attached to a cathedral and led worship in the cathedral and the surrounding churches. Today, most Canons live in their parishes but they have their own seat in the cathedral and, together with the Dean and Archdeacons, they form the governing body of the cathedral. In the Diocese of Monmouth, there are ten Canons. All are senior priests who have normally held additional diocesan posts of responsibility.
