Irene says:
It is a delight and privilege to affirm and encourage world links in the parishes, to meet and work with colleagues from the other dioceses and agencies, and to develop the diocesan link with the diocese of the Highveld in South Africa.
Growing up in a dockside area of Liverpool I was used to seing people of different cultures from many parts of the world. The preference for my black doll, and the avid reading of stories about the lives of missionaries and the origins of mission organisations caused my mother to observe that I would become a missionary when I grew up.
Involvement in World Mission grew through my parish church as two curates became missionaries, one with Ruanda [CMS] the other in Chile [SAMS]. My husband Iain and I were much involved with Ruanda as we awaited God’s leading to full time service – maybe to Africa. He sent us to London, the Potteries and South Wales, and it was nearly 30 years before we went to Africa, to Mozambiqe and South Africa!
Hosting many friends, old and new, from various parts of the world over the years, praying and supporting their work maintained my interest in world mission. In 2002, hosting visitors from the Highveld led to our parish link.
I became Bishop’s nominee for USPG, representing our diocese, and then was appointed World Mission Officer. My job is to work with mission agencies and organisations, to bring the work they do to the parishes of the diocese.
I am also an Associate Mission Advisor for USPG and CMS Representative for Monmouth Diocese.
