On Sunday 6th January the Bishop of Monmouth, Rt Revd Dominic Walker OGS, admitted two new members to the Order of St Woolos at a service in St Woolos Cathedral, Newport.

Miss Pam Jones

Pam Jones has a long record of serving the Diocese through its work in education.  She was nominated to the Diocesan Council for Education by Bishop Eryl Thomas in 1968 and served for 20 years.  She was a member of the Diocesan Schools Committee for over 37 years until July last year.

Pam was appointed the first Deputy Headteacher of the new All Saints’ Church in Wales Primary School at Llanedeyrn in 1975 and stayed in that post until her retirement in 1990.

Appointed as a Bishop’s Visitor to Church Schools in the Diocese by Bishop Clifford Wright in 1991, Pam undertook this role until last July.  In this role, she exercised a much-valued ministry, being a friend and support to many headteachers, to teaching and non-teaching staff, and to pupils.  She was always there when needed – in the build-up to inspections, and at times of bereavement, in particular – and her timely gifts of flowers and chocolates will be long remembered.  Above all, perhaps, she was respected as a model of discretion.

The whole Church School community in the Diocese is delighted by the recognition of Pam’s faithful and devoted service.

Mr Peter Lea

Peter became a member of the Diocesan Board of Finance in 1999 and was elected to its Executive Committee in June 2000.  A year later, in June 2001, he was elected Chairman of the Diocesan Board of Finance and served in that role until October last year.  In addition, during that time he has served the Diocese and the Province as a member of the Representative Body of the Church in Wales.

Chairmanship of the Board of Finance is a key appointment in any Diocese and the Chairman is also a member of the Parsonage Board, the Churches and Pastoral Committee and the Standing Committee.

During the time of Peter’s chairmanship, the Church in Wales undertook a major review of its finances and Peter had the task of guiding us through the changes brought about by the Rowe-Beddoe Review and ensuring that the Diocese planned for the future.  Ministry and mission are dependent on finance and Peter always combined his own commitment to the gospel with his professional advice in guiding the Board in its decisions.

Peter has given generously of his time and professional expertise to the Diocese whilst as the same time being in practice as a chartered accountant.  He has frequently attended formal meetings and private meetings with individuals which have taken him away from his office, and his willingness to do this has been much appreciated.
