Order of St woolos 2007

At 6.30pm on Sunday 21st January the Bishop of Monmouth, Rt Revd Dominic Walker OGS, admitted seven new members to the Order of St Woolos at a service in St Woolos Cathedral, Newport.

William (Bill) Baker

As the County Archivist, William Baker used to check parish records from the nineteen fifties before becoming the first Diocesan Archivist in this diocese in the early nineteen eighties, serving in that capacity for nearly twenty years. As well as having the oversight of Parish Records he catalogued the Diocesan Records dating g back to the late nineteenth century.

Thomas (Tom) Cowlin

Tom Cowlin was a member of the Diocesan Board of Finance for over twenty years before becoming a Diocesan Officer, and has been a loyal and knowledgeable Trustee of the Diocesan Trust since the early nineteen seventies.

He was licensed as a Reader in 1959, and was Chairman of the Diocesan Readers Association in the mid nineteen nineties.

Jean Hackett

Jean Hackett has served in Diocesan posts for the Mothers’ Union for the past 21 years, most recently serving as Diocesan President.

For around 16 years she served as librarian for the Diocesan Audio and Visual Resources Committee and was a member of the Provincial Division for Evangelism and Adult Education for 3 years.

She has been a member of the Women’s World Day of Prayer National Committee for England, Wales and Northern Ireland for the past 11 years, first as representative of the English-Speaking Churches in Wales and more recently as the Chairperson.

Ena Jenkins

Ena Jenkins has been a Bishop’s Visitor and Inspector of RE in church schools in this diocese, as well as former Chairman of the Diocesan Schools Committee.

Ena was a Mother’s Union Speaker for many years, and more recently has given lectures at Ty Mawr Convent and in this Cathedral.

She has been a Tutor in Literature and Theology at each level of the Lampeter Course.

Edward (Ted) Leake

Readers exercise an important and valuable ministry. Ted Leake has been a Reader since 1948, and a Reader in the diocese since 1975. He was Chairman of the Diocesan Readers Association in the early nineteen nineties, and he has enjoyed officiating and preaching in a large number of churches throughout this diocese.

Edward (Ted) Owen

Ted Owen is recognised for his service to youth in this diocese, and in particular as Battalion Commanding Officer of the Church Lads Brigade for twelve years after the Battalion was reinstated in 1972. Ted was a member of the Diocesan Youth Committee for many years, and has been a Reader in this diocese since 1969.

Donald (Don) Willis

DonaldWillis is one of four readers who are this evening being made members of the Order of St Woolos for their service to this diocese. Donald was licensed as a Reader in 1957, and during the last forty years has held four key offices in the Diocesan Readers Association, those of Librarian, Secretary, Vice-Chairman and Chairman.
