Cathedral NEWS

NEW CANONS APPOINTED

The Bishop of Monmouth, the Rt Revd Dominic Walker OGS, has appointed two new Canons to take up vacancies in the Chapter of Newport Cathedral:

The Revd Tim Clement is Vicar of Bettws Newydd, Area Dean of Raglan and Usk, and Rural Life Adviser for the Diocese.

The Revd Alan Tyler is Senior Heathcare Chaplain at the Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport.

The Bishop has also appointed the Revd Roger Hewett, Vicar of Blaina and Area Dean of Blaenau Gwent to become an Honorary Canon of the Cathedral.

Canons were originally the monks who were attached to a cathedral and led worship there and in the surrounding churches. Today, most Canons live in their parishes but they have their own seat in the cathedral and together with the Dean and Archdeacons they form the governing body of the cathedral.

In the Diocese of Monmouth there are ten Canons. They are all senior priests who have normally held additional diocesan posts of responsibility.

The new Canons will be Installed at Evensong on November 16th.

JOY COMES TO ST WOOLOS

With over 2000 visitors a day expected to descend on the Cathedral for the Gala Festival of Flowers in November plans are well under way.

Under the title Joy to the World over 80 displays with a Christmas theme have been designed. Last April flower arrangers from across South Wales and the West Country visited the Cathedral to design their displays.

Among the displays will be the Twelve Days of Christmas - a well known song but with a less well known history. The song was originally written as a way of teaching Catholics their faith during the time Tudor persecutions.

On a lighter note popular Pantomimes will be represented, among them: Jack and the Beanstalk and Cinderella. Other displays will recall favourite Christmas carols (While Shepherds watched, Star of Wonder, Star of Light, In the bleak midwinter), as well as Christmas traditions like exchanging presents.

The displays will take us from the Pagon mid-Winter celebration right up to the present day celebrations - and all interpreted through flowers.

Admission to the Festival which will run from November 27th - 30th is £5, or £4 for groups of 10 or more.

GEORGIAN FRIENDS: Visit from Kutaisi.

In April 2008 a Cathedral delegation consisting of Fr Mark Soady (Minor Canon), Catherine Hayman (Warden) and Brian Cox (Cathedral Administrator) visited Kutaisi (Newport's Twin City in the former Soviet Republic of Georgia). In addition to visiting many ancient sites, meetings took place with church leaders to re-kindle the strong relationship there was between the Christians in both cities in previous years. Fr Mark Soady delivered Christian greetings from the Bishop of Monmouth to Metropolitian Kalistrase.

The Delegation also met with the Mayor of Kutaisi, who presented the Cathedral with a precious Icon of St George, the Patron Saint of Georgia.

In return, in early September, the Cathedral was pleased to be able to host a visit from Georgian Christians, following the current troubles with Russia. This was the latest in a series of twinning activities involving the Cathedral and the Georgian Orthodox Church in Georgia's second city.

On Bible Sunday 2007 the Newport / Kutaisi Twinning Association gave a gift of a new Icon of the Evangelist Luke to the Cathedral.

The Icons adorn the Cathedral's St. Luke Chapel.
