Royston Clifford Wright, Archdeacon of Newport and a former senior chaplain in the Royal Navy became Bishop of Monmouth in 1986. He was a very good administrator and the life of the diocese continued on an even keel. The work of Sunday Schools was affirmed while the value of Church day-schools was asserted by the opening of two voluntary aided schools.
The administration of the diocese was greatly assisted by the purchase of 64, Caerau Road, Newport, as a diocesan office and resources centre, something that Bishop Childs had always wanted. The benefice of Pontypool was established and the committee for Evangelism organised the Whichway? campaign in preparation for the decade of Evangelism. Bishop Clifford retired in 1991.
