The Rivers
a presentation by The Monmouth Group of Churches
at 7pm on Wednesday, 12th November, in St Mary’s Church, Monmouth.
The rivers are the Nile, The Tigris and the Euphrates, The Jordan, the Thames, The Danube, The Rhine and the Mississipi, The Ohio, and the Delaware.
The thread of the story begins with the attempt to suppress any English translation of the scriptures after 1398. It continues with the enormous effect of Tyndale’s translation in the 16th century on the development of the English language and Sir Thomas More’s attempt to frustrate the translation because it would lead to the collapse of national and religious order. We shall outline how his worst fears were realised, and the way in which the politics, philosophy and poetry of the English speaking peoples developed. The institution of slavery and the development of freedom and eventually of equality for the black Americans will be illustrated.
Anyone in the Diocese interested in history, language or philosophy or the Bible is welcome to attend. We believe it will be particularly helpful for students facing university entrance exams in any of these subjects
