Yellow ribbons and yellow flowers: celebrating Easter at Panteg

group photo of the ladies in their hats

It all started with a chance remark at the St Mary's Guild Fish and Chip Supper when many of the ladies had worn Easter bonnets decorated by their own fair hands. “Why don't we wear these to church on Easter Sunday?” asked Diane Boughay, the leader.

“No problem,” said the Rector, and so an idea was born.

The message went out for ladies to wear a hat to church on Easter Sunday and for everyone to bring a flower (preferably yellow) to decorate the cross. The result was a huge variety of hats, from classy wedding ones to chicken-decorated straw ones, and an abundance of flowers placed in the wire covering the cross — the same cross which had had nails hammered into it on Good Friday when it was the focal point of the afternoon meditation service.

What a transformation! On Good Friday, many of the congregation had worn dark coloured clothes and the mood and the music was quiet and sombre. On Easter morning there was joy, colour and celebration.

And all this tied in so beautifully with Bishop Dominic's letter in the last Newsletter.
We thank our organist, Walford Hutchings for taking pictures after the service and Jen Walby for doing the technical stuff to get them safely into the e-mail tubes.

Looking more closely, was the Rector really wearing rabbit ear-rings....?

Ed: I’ve tried enhancing the picture but the ear-rings remain unidentified!
