The Stable Cat speaks:

They think a lot of me.
Of course they do.
I am the cat, the stable cat,
keeping vermin away.
Each mouse, each rat,
is mine.
Twilight and dawn, I pounce, I kill.
And then,
one night when all was still,
strangers, a light, a cry.
And there was I, yes, I,
the stable cat.
Her feet were bare
and cold,
and there was I, warm, curious, bold.
So I lay on them - and
she touched my head, a loving hand
and
look - her mark’s still there, there -
M
No! NOT for Mog -
for Mother, Mary, Magnificat,
a blessing for me,
THE stable cat.
