It’s all happening in Rhymney and Abertysswg
St David’s Parish Church, Rhymney, and St Paul’s of Abertysswg have become a very busy Benefice. In addition to the normal Sunday and Wednesday services the benefice is engrossed in the ambitious Restoration Programme for St David’s, with numerous events being organised, not just to involve the community in the restoration of this beautiful Grade II* listed building, but to also raise the profile of both churches.
The current estimate for this 4-phase restoration is £700,000, with a more likely completion figure being closer to £1m. To date, the parish has raised £131,000 through fund raising and grant awards, so it is anticipated that Phase 1 will start early next year.
The mammoth task of tidying up the churchyard has already started with the aid of Fast Forward, a New Deal organisation managed by Caerphilly CBC.
Recent profile-raising events involving the community have included a very successful choral concert with the Rhymney Silurian Male Choir and Caerphilly Youth Singers, plus a very enjoyable day trip to St Fagans Museum.
Forthcoming fund raising events include:
- sponsored slim by one of the congregation
- sponsored balloon ride by an 87 year old lady parishioner
- Autumn Rainbow Fair on 17th October
- Cheese and Wine evening with a French theme on 20th November
- Vicar’s Knees-up on 17th December, including carols, mince pies and mulled wine.
