A CONCERT TO REMEMBER

The pipe organ in the Church of St Stephen and St Tathan, Caerwent, was installed in 1928 to commemorate eleven local men who died in the Great War.

Descendants of those eleven men were in the congregation on Friday, 17th July, when the Bishop re-dedicated the restored instrument.

During the restoration, children from local schools visited the church to see the work at first hand and talk with the organ restorer, Paul Daly. The educational aspect was an important part of the project which gained a grant of £11,300 from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Over £7000 was also raised locally in less than two years.

The celebratory concert featured a recital by the Dean of Monmouth who played music from the Flanders area.

Following this the Netherwent Singers and instrumentalists performed a Requiem especially written for the occasion by Emlyn Powell.
