Church Schools in the Parish of St Mellons

What do we get up to? Well here are two slightly unusual things

schoolchildren at St Michael's

On Monday 11th May after a “power shooting” session, Y6 at Bishop Childs Church in Wales School climbed aboard a big yellow bus and headed towards Llandaff. Once in Llandaff we carefully crocodiled down the pavement and into St Michael’s College. Fr David said he had been trained there long before our parents even got married. In the College we were split up into three groups and toured the College. We saw things like the Chapel where the students have to go sometimes three times day (Fr David said there was a sculpture like Nanki Poo there); the Library; pictures of old students including Fr David in 19… and the Principal’s Study – it was massive! We also did some dressing up on the lawn and Tommy had to be a Bishop and ordain people. Fr David said not to tell Bishop Dominic please! Last of all we ended up in the dining room for chicken nuggets and chips with seconds and thirds. We also met the Principal, Dr Peter Sedgwick, and after lunch we went to the Cathedral and met the Dean.

On Thursday May 14th, St Mellons Church in Wales School Junior Department (including some staff) sang Evensong in Newport Cathedral. They looked, sang and behaved like little angels. This should have taken place earlier in the year but it snowed rather a lot. Some of the music was chosen by the assistant organist, Mr Chris Denton, and some by Mrs Nicola Price and Mrs Shirley Kellen. A lot of work had gone into the rehearsals beforehand and Mrs Price was the “Director” with Mrs Kellen on the organ. The anthem was “Fairest Lord Jesus”, which is one of Vicar’s favourites and (apparently) not the one he suggested to Mrs K. Then, guess who sang the service – yes, our very own Canon KM Denison. He even said it was OK to clap at the end. The children were well supported by parents, governors, staff and parishioners. The school was also very grateful to Cathedral parishioners who provided refreshments after the service. It is good to have the opportunity of singing in the Cathedral and we look forward to the next occasion – maybe a Sunday evening?
