Stitches of love in Goetre

It was in the summer of 1990 that Mrs Mavis Thomas sat down and produced a wonderful altar cloth for St Peter's Church but, as with all things, time has taken its toll. So at a meeting of the PCC it was agreed that a new one was needed, and the original would be kept as a spare. We knew the only person to approach was Mavis, I also knew that she was often busy. But our request was met with joy and enthusiasm. We had caught Mavis just at the right time as she was looking for a project! Now, living next door, I often caught a glimpse of her busy making her lace or crocheting, and for someone like me who can never understand one end of a crochet hook from another, I am full of admiration for anyone with such a skill and oh, such patience. After the church had purchased the linen and cottons, Mavis set about her mission and, lo and behold, after a few short weeks she produced the most beautiful cloth. This was used for the first time on Easter Sunday.
On behalf of St Peter’s, we would like to say a big “thank you, Mavis, for your time, your patience, and the love you have put into each and every stitch.”
