Remembrance in St Mellons Church Schools
Both Church Schools in the Parish of St Mellons chose to remember Armistice Day in their own ways.
Years 5&6 in St Mellons Church in Wales put together a service of songs, poetry, prose, prayer and scripture. The service was held in the Village Hall and centred on the memorial from the old school honouring the fallen from previous generations of our school. The children led us from honour of past sacrifices to hopes of peace for the future.
Year 6 at Bishop Childs Church in Wales School were asked to plan a Eucharist around the theme of Remembrance. It was a Family Eucharist so mums and dads and the whole school family came together for this. The children chose all the readings, including poetry from WW1, songs and prayers. It was very intelligently and thoughtfully planned and whilst honouring the fallen thought constructively about peace.
The children of both schools have no experience of armed conflict (unless they have relatives serving now) but many of their guests had. They were treated with the utmost respect and appreciated what the children had done. It is a sign of the thoughtfulness of our children, and the way in which they are taught, that they are able to imagine the past and hope for the future in a thoroughly Christ-like fashion.
