Worldwide friendships in the Mothers’ Union
Making new friends: Kathy and the Provincial Trainer from Melanesia, Sarah Sikivape
The Mothers’ Union has a distinctive tradition of personal links and relationships worldwide. This was evident in March when I, as Monmouth Diocesan President, attended the first Regional Conference in Toowoomba, Brisbane, Australia.
Delegates from far and near celebrated a rich diversity of cultures. In addition to sharing daily worship and Bible Study, we engaged in lively dialogue to evaluate the effectiveness of MU work in our respective Regions and Dioceses. Close relationships were indeed firmly established and we agreed on several goals to be implemented everywhere, not least the recruitment of new and younger members, in a process of "Growing Together". Methods and means of mission change, but Mary Sumner's aim of winning the homes of the nations for Christ remains our chief objective. With renewed vision and enthusiasm I return to challenge all our members in the Mothers' Union branches to grow and develop fresh expressions of work in to-day's church and society.
The Mothers’ Union national roadshow is coming to St David’s Hall, Cardiff, on 19 June and will be well worth a visit. From 1.30pm - 4.30pm there will be a presentation of the work of the Mothers' Union around the world and locally. This will include a film exploring world issues. Rosemary Kempsell, Worldwide President, and Reg Bailey, Chief Executive, will be interviewing local Mothers' Union volunteers, and looking at how the Mothers' Union is changing communities. The guest speaker is Dame Ilora Finlay who sits in the House of Lords and deals with ethical issues. The afternoon will end with an act of worship.
