During the War

photo of homeguardDuring the Easter holidays, St David’s church, Beaufort, hosted a themed activity afternoon called ‘During the War’.

The event was organised by the Retired Senior Volunteer Programme who, along with activities, visit local schools to give the pupils an insight into life during World War Two.

The Church Hall was filled with exhibits and memorabilia, and a film was shown of Britain during the war years, whilst in the grounds there was a living historian re-enacting Home Guard duties complete with Home Guard Post.

During the afternoon, some of the children and adults were put through their paces and given an insight into life in the Home Guard, as well as sampling some of the war rations on offer which included Spam sandwiches, bread and jam, and jam tarts. There was also a WWII fire engine and a modern rescue vehicle from Ebbw Vale Fire Station.

The weather was beautiful as local scholol children and their parents browsed around the exhibits and joined in the fun, taking part in some of the competitions. Members of the local community and benefice congregations joined us, and everyone who attended hailed the day as a great success.

If you would like more informaation on the RSVP or to check if there is a group in your area, please telephone 029 2039 0477.
