Tymawr Convent

photo of members of the communityTymawr is an Anglican community in the Church in Wales living under monastic vows in the beautiful Welsh border country near Monmouth in Gwent. We live a contemplative life of prayer based on silence, solitude and learning to live together, under a modern rule, Cistercian in spirit.

Our life together includes study, recreation and work in the house and extensive grounds. At the heart of our corporate life is the Eucharist and the daily Office, offered in union with the world and its needs. We are often joined for the services by our visitors and by members of the neighbourhood. The Chapel is always open for prayer.

We endeavour to offer an environment of prayer and hospitality to guests. We welcome people from all denominations and faiths and those who are simply seeking to widen their ‘spiritual horizons’. We would be delighted to hear from you should you wish to visit, book in for a quiet day, stay in the Convent or in our self-catering guest house. We can accommodate groups of up to nine for a stay in the guest house and up to twenty for a day.

Our surroundings play a vital role in the life of prayer of both the community and our visitors and guests. Our gardens offer their own special gifts of peace and beauty and opportunities for solitude, reflection and re-creation.

The Community at Tymawr is at the centre of the family of people who link in with our life through prayer, work and mutual support. Some commit to a personal rule of life to form a structure for a life of prayer in their own environment.

Men and women, married or single may experience the contemplative life by living alongside the community for periods longer than the usual guest stay. If you would like to know more about this do contact us to ask about our ‘Alongsider’ Programme.

That was the title of a three-day retreat for the bereaved which was held at Tymawr Convent at the end of January and led by Revd Jessica Aidley. It was an opportunity for people to talk about their experience of bereavement, and the person they loved. As well as talking, there was an opportunity to explore and express feelings and thoughts through working with art materials and modelling clay as well as writing letters and poems. The format was planned but very flexible in response to the people who attended.

Michaelgarth is a retreat house in the grounds of Tymawr Convent, and sessions were planned to give the opportunity to attend any of the services at the convent if people wished. There are also large gardens and the surrounding countryside to explore. The aim was to give people space to talk and be heard or to work through their own feelings, and to provide resources and aids to help on the way.

We hope to hold a similar retreat in the future. If you would be interested please contact the convent on 01600 860244 for more details when they are available.
