Open Day at St Mellons
As a result of publicity generated by the Churches Tourism Network, Wales, St Mellons church decided to hold an Open Day on Saturday 8th September.
It was a fantastic success!
The organisation of the day was undertaken by parishioners, but especially by the People’s Warden. Lots of people volunteered to do one-hour slots through the day and act as “Reeta the Greeter”. Someone donated tea/coffee and biscuits to make people welcome. Special flower arrangements were undertaken and one of the PCC displayed some of the church documents, along with other interesting topical books. One of the choir even thought of “mood music” and brought along a CD of the Church Choir (yes we are on a CD) singing music for the Women’s World Day of Prayer.
The Vicar trawled some archives and, thanks to other people’s work, came up with a two-sided A4 guide to the Church. He was so pleased that he had done it on his computer and with photos – probably he should have been out visiting! Regular parishioners were amazed to learn things about their own church.
Then there were the visitors – perhaps we should have counted but we were too busy enjoying ourselves. One couple turned up to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary and were so pleased to find the church open, remember the Revd CR Gower Rees and take photos. Lots of others just wandered around and soaked up the atmosphere. Yes it was a good day, full of Good News - and yes, we will do it again.
