Magor CIW Primary

October has been an exciting month for pupils at Magor School. We have just celebrated our 150th birthday! The celebrations started at the end of the last school year with services for pupils and parents in the churches of the Benefice. However, on 10th October we had a day-long party for pupils, parents and friends of the school to really mark this important milestone.

It began with an exciting but reflective assembly by Reverend Mark Lawson-Jones. We were thrilled to have a number of visitors to join in our collective worship. Members of the clergy, including Kenneth Sharpe, Archdeacon of Newport, were in attendance, along with members of the LEA, governors and local community.

Headteacher, Mr Gareth Atwell, started proceedings by talking about Magor School from the very beginning using information from our log books dating back to the late 1800’s. Nursery pupils then took a look at the importance of the Harvest festival. Year 3 children showed life as it was back in the late 1800’s and the reception classes sang some nursery rhymes. Year 2 pupils then took us back to the eighties with their lively rendition of “Fame” whilst Year 1 children reflected on our changing world and how we should be caring for it.

We held a party lunch for pupils, staff and friends of the school for which the canteen baked a special cake to mark the occasion. The festivities continued into the afternoon with Year 6 pupils offering their thoughts about school during the second world war, Year 4 pupils reminiscing about the sixties and seventies and Year 5 contemplating schooldays in the millennium.

The day was a great success amongst parents, pupils and guests of the school and, whilst contemplating some happy memories we have created many more. In our celebration of 150 years we have seen just how important our school is to both our pupils and the community. Here’s to another 150 years of Magor CIW Primary!
