Mothers Union visit Lambeth Palace
On a very wet and dreary morning, Friday 13 July 2007, forty nine MU members from the Diocese travelled to London to visit Lambeth Palace.
Jane Williams had given us an open invitation at our Sharing Day in 2006.
We all assembled at the ‘Oil Gate’. Apparently this entrance is called the ‘Oil Gate’, because that’s where the oil is delivered! At 2pm the gates were opened and we were welcomed by Amy Wilson, Tours Co-coordinator.
The tour began with a short video presentation of welcome from Archbishop Rowan and then started in the lowest floor of what is called Cranmer’s Tower, probably erected c.1500. The Great Hall had display panels depicting the history of the Palace and an exhibition, including the gloves worn by King Charles 1 on the day of his execution. The series of portraits of Archbishops was also very interesting.
The tour entailed a lot of walking and standing, but I think I can say a very happy group left the Palace at 4.30pm

MU Sharing Day
MU members, with some of the clergy, from the whole of the Diocese met together at St Paul’s church, Newport, in October, to discuss “Enhancing our Branches and Ourselves”. Following the welcome led by Kathy Palmer, MU Diocesan President, the opening worship was led by The Archdeacon of Newport, Ken Sharp.
The day that followed was a lively interactive debate on prayer, worship, public speaking and programme planning. It was facilitated by MU Diocesan speakers and Marian Pope MU Training Officer for the UK and Ireland. Much was learned and practised.
Rev Justin Groves, vicar of St Paul’s, led the mid-day prayers accompanied by James, a student pastor playing his guitar. The closing service and blessing were led by Rev Audrey Jenkins, MU Diocesan Chaplain.
Definitely an enhancing day for us all.
