‘Cut the carbon’ lunch in Mynyddislwyn

group photo

The walkers in the Cut the Carbon March organised by Christian Aid covered 1000 miles in 80 days around the British Isles, commencing on July 14th in Belfast and ending on October 2nd in London. The aim of the March was to highlight the problems caused to the poorer, underdeveloped countries by global warming, to which the richer, industrialised countries are the major contributers.

During one of the stages through Wales, the walkers stopped at St Augustine’s church in the Benefice of Mynyddislwyn. They were met here by the Area Dean of Bedwellty, benefice clergy, the MP for Islwyn - Rt Hon Doug Touhig, Councillor Ray Davies (Deputy Mayor of Caerphilly Borough Council), a team from Groundwork Caerphilly and members of local churches and chapels. The latter provided a substantial lunch which was followed by presentations from some of the walkers from South Africa and a lively discussion involving everyone.

They were sent on their way to their next stop at Caerphilly well-refreshed and clearly very heartened by the warm and knowledgable reception they had received.
