photoOpen Day in Oakdale

Persistent rain did not stop a good turnout when
St David’s Church, Oakdale, (part of the Mynyddislwyn Benefice) threw open its doors for an Open Day and Garden Party on Saturday 21 July. The event, which was part of a year of celebrations for the 100th anniversary of the foundation of Oakdale village, was a chance for the people of the village to explore the building and enjoy the hospitality, friendly welcome and excellent catering on offer!

The interior of the church was used in creative ways to give a space for people to meet and talk, while the chancel was set aside for quiet reflection. A specially-produced leaflet guided visitors around the main landmarks of the church (font, pulpit, altar etc) and used candles, icons and stained glass windows as a focus for contemplation. Visitors were encouraged to light a candle, and to take away a booklet of favourite prayers to use at home.

The Ladies’ Fellowship organised the plentiful refreshments, contributed by members of the congregation, and the Garden Party carried on despite the weather thanks to a selection of donated gazebos. Visitors commented on the friendly welcome and the atmosphere of celebration,

The event was a real success, and is part of our commitment to building community in this place”.
