Mothers Union say “It’s not fair!”

Trustees and officers of the Monmouth Diocese Mothers’ Union with family and friends recently travelled to Liverpool and attended Liverpool Anglican Cathedral for an evening service and represented the Monmouth Diocese at the Mothers’ Union General meeting. We received a warm welcome from the Bishop of Liverpool and Liverpool Diocese. The five provinces were represented and also worldwide delegates. At the meeting we were greeted by Rosemary Kempsell our Worldwide President and our General Trustees and Provincial Presidents.

The theme was “It’s Not Fair” – we can make a difference worldwide tackling issues such as injustice, inequality, illiteracy. As a part of this aim the MU uses its consultative status at the United Nations to send a team to the Commission on the Status of Women, who work alongside the delegation from the British Government. The theme this year focused on eliminating discrimination against the girl child.
Reg Bailey our Chief Executive and the Unit Co-ordinators from Mary Sumner House gave their interpretation of “Thinking Outside The Box”. By “thinking outside the box” the Mothers’ Union will continue to share God’s love in this world where ordinary people are achieving the extraordinary.

In the afternoon our keynote speaker was Jonathon Aitkin who gave an account of his path to Christianity – “From Belmarsh Prison to Liverpool Cathedral”.

Reg Bailey interviewed three Mothers’ Union members on the question “Who is marginalised”. This gave an insight to many of our troubled communities and how the MU members are playing a vital part.

We ended with closing worship with the Bishop of Warrington.

It was a wonderful experience joining approximately 3,000 MU members. Next year this event will take place in Cardiff – please come along.
