Magor Children send clean water to the Highveld

photo

When Bishop David visited Magor Church in Wales Primary School he was presented with a special drinking straw.

The School Council were asked by a group of year 6 girls if they could raise money to buy ‘filtastraws’ for South Africa. After research on the internet the school council found that a Rotary club in Great Britain supplied filtastraws and gave us full information about them. They are a simple device designed for people in the third world who do not have access to clean drinking water.

The main purpose of the filtastraw is to kill bacteria. Scientific tests show that filtastraws kill most bacteria, providing drinking water which is as good as tap water.

The school council purchased a filtastraw to present to Bishop David Beetge and an information booklet. A further 88 straws will be delivered to the Highveld.

The children and staff held a non-uniform day with an African theme and raised £300 to purchase the filtastraws. The school is purchasing the filtastraws through Brynmawr Rotary Club which is running a National Water Project.

The school council is grateful to Amie Hill, Florence Cordner, Laura Elliott and Katy Wall for their initial suggestion.
