The St. Woolos Mothers’ Union’s May meeting coincided with the arrival of Rev. Richard Kirlew on his tractor, accompanied by his wife, Liz, and their dog, Raife.
We were delighted when Rev. Richard and his wife Liz agreed to join us in the hall for a warming cup of tea and then stay for the rest of our meeting.
The Rev Richard drove the tractor to all six Welsh cathedrals a journey of some 700 miles along the hills and valleys, from St David’s in West Wales to Brecon in Mid Wales – via Bangor and St. Asaph in North Wales and Newport and Cardiff in South Wales. He is driving a borrowed 7.5-tonne JCB Fastrac, towing a caravan, for eight days – at a maximum speed of 40mph, meeting bishops and an archbishop on his way.
Rev. Kirlew is the Church in Wales’ national lead on rural affairs and he hopes to raise at least £3,000 for three charities – the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution (RABI); Farm Crisis Network (FCN) and The Colwyn Benefice – a very small group of rural parishes in the Radnorshire Hills where he lives.
