Report from Spring Council

MU MEETS MP

MONMOUTH DIOCESE MOTHERS’ UNION SPRING COUNCIL 2011

DAVID Davies MP was the guest speaker at the Diocese of Monmouth Mothers’ Union Spring Council meeting recently.

More than 50 people were present at the St John The Baptist Church Hall in Risca, Newport, to hear Mr Davies deliver his popular ‘A Day in the Life’ talk and presentation – a behind the scenes look at the Houses of Parliament and the life of an MP. Afterwards, he took part in a lively question and answer session.

Mr Davies said: “I thoroughly enjoy giving these talks. Not only are they a great way to meet constituents, they help give people a better idea of what I do when I’m in Westminster both in my role as a backbench MP and Chair of the Welsh Affairs Committee.

“I’m also very aware of the recent bad publicly surrounding Members of Parliament and I’m anxious to correct some of the more fanciful newspaper reports.

“My ‘A Day in the Life’ talk seems to have been well received across the constituency and I would be more than happy to come and speak to any local groups or organisations”.

Diocesan Publicity Officer, Shelley Miller, added: “Members very much enjoyed the question and answer session, especially raising further awareness of the Mothers’ Union’s Bye Buy Baby Campaign whereby our Chief Executive has been invited by the Prime Minister to join a select committee to help tackle the problem of the commercialisation and sexualisation of childhood”. Mr Davies continued “ this is a very valid and serious campaign and being a father myself, I will definitely be adding my signature to the petition which was recently handed into no.10, by the Mothers’ Union Worldwide President Rosemary Kempsell”

Diocesan President Kathy Palmer concluded that the Spring Council had been successful, and that Mr Davies’ talk had infact been very enlightening and not quite what the public perceive it to be.  It was also refreshing to discuss the Bye Buy Baby Campaign in terms of continuing to raise awareness whilst acknowledging it’s importance.
